This fairytale 900-year-old castle was a Norman stronghold, a Jacobean country house and a Georgian mansion, among many other things. It has a moat, gardens and parkland, where you can lose yourself in the spiralling yew maze, and see 100 species of birds in the aviary. Look out for falconry displays in the Birds Prey Centre, which is behind the maze, with tiny American kestrels, hawks and a Russian steppe eagle.
