He Shoots - He Scores
The Original Harlem Globetrotters aren’t just one of the world’s most entertaining sporting teams, but also one of the most successful – and The O2 is welcoming them to London on the 28th May. The Globetrotters have won many trophies and accolades over the decades, so fans are in for a real treat if they catch them on their annual tour.
This world-renowned basketball troupe combine showbiz with sporting excellence. They boast a history stretching back nine decades, ever since the team was formed in 1926. Since then they have dazzled 144 million fans in 122 countries – and even boast Pope Francis as an honorary Globetrotter. Expect spectacular trick shots, quick wit and eye-popping athleticism. If you imagine the most skilful moves on the basketball court – a slam dunk, for example – then add embellishments such as a figure-eight weave, or the innovative four-point shot (making the shooting mark further back from the basket), then this is what the basketball batting an eyelid.
It’s not all about the towering men, though. One of the Globetrotters’ newest members is the electrifying Cherelle ‘Torch’ George – the fourth woman to play for the team in 2018. At just 5ft 3in, she advocates that ‘size doesn’t matter’ – all the better, bearing in mind she joins a star-studded line-up that includes the 6ft 8in forwards El Gato and Zeus.
From global superstars to UK competitors, The O2 hosts another basketball contest: the BBL Play-Off Finals on the 20th May. It’s likely to be a sell-out event, featuring
two matches to find out which teams from the British Basketball League will win the final trophies of the 2017-18 season. In addition to the women’s (1pm) and men’s (4pm) matches, get ready for plenty of courtside action including music, cheerleaders and even a dunk contest, where you can have a go at beating the best players.
