London’s best gastropubs
England is rightly proud of its pubs and if you don’t dine in one of London’s best gastropubs during your visit, then you’ll be missing out. But with 3,530 pubs in London (according to the latest figures published by the Mayor of London), how do you know which ones to try?
Fortunately, the 2019 list of England’s top 50 gastropubs was recently announced – and London bagged eight. Here are Sarah Riches’ top three from the list, which she’s chosen for their classic British menus and great beer gardens.
The Red Lion & Sun
In leafy Highgate, this gastropub serves meat such as Aberdeen Angus ribs, supplied by Highgate Butchers. There are also Jersey rock oysters and a veggie nut roast with falling-off-your-plate Yorkshire puddings. Remember to save space for the sticky toffee pudding, too. In summer, the back garden blooms with hanging flower baskets.

The Hero of Maida
This Victorian pub near Little Venice has a leafy, two-tier deck at the back, which is reserved for non-smokers. Thanks to its tall ceilings and big windows, inside is bright, while a recent renovation has given it a modern look.
The menu changes daily but on my visit, I opted for smoked haddock with mashed potato and cider butter, which was delicious. Order the Morecambe Bay oysters and Eton mess (an English summer dessert made with meringue and berries), which you could wash down with rhubarb cider.

The Drapers Arms
This grand, pastel-blue pub is close to the shops and theatre pubs in Angel. Its garden has chairs and cream parasols, there’s a fireplace inside and the menu features potted mackerel, black pudding on toast, suet-crust beef pie, lemon sole with samphire and custard tart.
