Sleepless, A Musical Romance opens in Wembley
Old romantics should make time for Sleepless, A Musical Romance while they’re visiting London. Based on the 1993 film Sleepless in Seattle, the musical is coming to Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre (from 24 Mar 2020).
What’s the story?
The world premiere of Sleepless, A Musical Romance recreates the plot of the 1993 romantic comedy, which starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
It follows widower Sam after he moves to Seattle with his eight-year-old son, Jonah. When Jonah phones a radio show, Sam is forced to talk about his broken heart and sleepless nights live on air. Sam soon becomes America’s most eligible bachelor – and a top news story for Annie, a feisty journalist living on the opposite side of the country. Can Jonah bring the two together on the top deck of New York’s Empire State Building?
Directed by Morgan Young (Elf, White Christmas, Big), Sleepless, A Musical Romance stars boybander Jay McGuiness from The Wanted and Girls Aloud’s Kimberley Walsh. The all-new score features 14 songs by Robert Scott and Brendan Cull.
The show takes to the stage of the new, 2,000-seat Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, formerly home to reality TV shows Pop Idol, The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.
The question is, why was the Troubadour chosen over a more traditional (and central) West End theatre? Director Morgan Young explains:
‘It’s an amazingly versatile space. The width of the stage gives a wonderful sense of movement when travelling from Manhattan and Seattle for instance, which takes actors 20 seconds. The theatre also allows us to have table seating, so the audience will be with Sam and Annie when they dine in the Aqua Room restaurant in Seattle, the Rainbow Room in New York or on Sam’s houseboat deck. The set also has to encompass many timelines and other locations such as an attic, various kitchens and bedrooms and a street in Manhattan.’
Young adds: ‘Because we visit so many locations, and some in only half a page of text, it’s important that the video walls enhance the story and what’s happening on stage instead of overwhelming it. As Sam is an architect, we decided to make the design echo his work. Therefore, the set and video design will be borne from skeletal architects’ drawings – simple pathways and lines.’
A top director, a familiar story and a new score all point to a hit run – so you’ll need to be quick to bag tickets.
