Mayor’s Letter: July 2017
A big welcome to London this July
London is world renowned for its diversity and open spirit, and nowhere is this more apparent than at the amazing community celebrations taking place this month. Thousands of people will line the streets for Pride in London, showcasing our city at its outward and inclusive best, and celebrating freedoms that we take for granted. I was proud to lead last year’s procession alongside London’s LGBTQ+ community and know that this year’s Pride will be one of the best yet. Trafalgar Square hosts a huge Eid celebration, where Londoners from all backgrounds and faiths mark the end of Ramadan.
London is a global leader for staging major sporting events. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park hosts the biggest global sporting contests of the year: the World Para Athletics Championships and August’s IAAF World Athletics Championships. This is the first time both have been held in the same summer in the same city. The park also hosts the Liberty Festival of deaf and disability arts, with live music, theatre and dance performances. You’ve picked a great month to visit!
