Mayor's Letter: March 2018
A big welcome to London this March
This year marks the centenary of the first women in the UK securing the right to vote. Throughout 2018 and beyond, we are celebrating the fact that it is the achievements and contributions of women from all walks of life which make cities like London great – with our #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign. There are events taking place to mark International Women’s Day, including the Women of the World festival at the Southbank Centre.
The next commission on the Fourth Plinth, the sculpture spot in Trafalgar Square, is a recreation of Iraq’s Lamassu, a winged bull monument which was destroyed by ISIS. Michael Rakowitz’sThe Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist is sure to be a source of debate.
The city will turn green for our annual St Patrick’s Day festival, including the famous parade. This year, it will be led by women of Irish descent from the worlds of culture, media and sport.
Whatever you do, have a great time!
Mayor of London
